Proof of Stake (PoS) is an alternative to PoW that aims to achieve distributed consensus without the high energy consumption. Instead of mining, validators are chosen to create new blocks based on the amount of cryptocurrency they are willing to "stake" or lock up as collateral. It's seen as a more energy-efficient and scalable consensus mechanism.
